mandate
The goal of this project was to capture Njideka Crosby’s essence and translate it into an art book containing information about her and her life. She is a nigerian artist that works primarily with collages made out of transferred photographs and various media. The project was very inspiring from the research, when I discovered the way she works and her life, to the design, where I was challenged with finding a cohesive solution for all the content to include.
insight
Throughout my research, I discovered that she is a creative artist that focuses on showing how her culture and the American culture collided and how that has shaped her art. Given that Crosby is a collage artist, color and typography contrast were exploited to show how variety can be joined together in a beautiful piece, just like her collage approach works.
outcome
The half sleeve shows how two different components, one too crowded and one very minimalistic, can interact together and convey a pleasing feeling. Yellow was chosen as a guiding color due to how it complements her work without shading it. Finally, type choices were made to reflect her conservative way of expressing her worldview but also, as contrasting typefaces, they were chosen to honor her amazing collage work.
